Luxury MPV
Toyota Alphard
Cross-border luxury for families and executives — the gold standard for SG↔KL. 6 pax with 2 checked + 2 cabin bags.
See Toyota Alphard details →Malaysia's first Premium Outlets, sitting at the Awana SkyWay cable car base. We map the brand mix, the JPO and Mitsui comparison, and the strategic timing trick that day-trippers always miss.
Genting Highlands Premium Outlets — usually shortened to GPO — is the outlet mall most Singaporeans don’t realise sits at the foot of the Awana SkyWay cable car. It opened in June 2017 as a joint venture between Simon Premium Outlets (the US operator behind Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA and Johor Premium Outlets) and Genting Plantations Berhad. At ~150+ stores across 425,000 square feet, GPO was the first Premium Outlets in Malaysia, and it remains the largest brand selection of the three Simon outlets in the country.
For SG visitors, GPO is the single best shopping stop on a Genting trip — outlet pricing on luxury and sports brands at 30 to 65 percent off SG retail, with tax-free refunds for foreign tourists. The catch is logistical, not commercial: you need to time the visit before you go up the mountain rather than on the way down, and you need to know that GPO doesn’t carry the top luxury houses. We map the brand cluster, the comparison vs JPO and Mitsui, and how to slot it into a 2D1N or day-trip from KL.
Genting Highlands Premium Outlets is at the base of the Awana SkyWay at roughly 600 metres elevation — the cable car base, not the Genting summit. From the outlet’s main entrance to the SkyWay platform is a five-minute walk, with around 3,500 free parking bays in between. That direct connection is the architectural point: you can finish a morning at the outlets, walk straight into the cable car and be at SkyAvenue, the casino and SkyWorlds in 25 minutes.
The operator pedigree matters. Simon Premium Outlets runs Premium Outlets across the US and Asia; in Malaysia they also operate Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) in Kulai and Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA near the airport. GPO opened in June 2017 as the third Simon outlet in the country and the first to carry the “Premium Outlets” brand here — JPO was renamed under the same playbook later. Same operator family, same outlet mechanics, different catchments.
GPO’s tenant mix splits cleanly into four categories. We render it that way because the headline brand list (~150 stores) is too long to be useful as a single dump.
Notable absence: Uniqlo isn’t inside GPO — there’s a separate Uniqlo location nearby. On the F&B side, GPO carries Coca Steamboat, KFC, Texas Chicken, McDonald’s, Starbucks, The Coffee Bean and a handful of local Chinese-Malaysian restaurants like Restoran Lim Mun Sing — see our Genting food guide for the wider mountain dining map.
Most outlet items run 30 to 65 percent off original retail. Premium fashion (Coach, Tory Burch, Michael Kors) sits in the 40 to 60 percent band. Sports brands (Nike, Adidas) at 30 to 50 percent. Best discounts cluster around MY public holidays, post-CNY clearance, post-Hari Raya clearance and post-Christmas clearance — same playbook as JPO.
Tax-free for foreign tourists. Bring your passport plus receipts to the limited tax-refund counters at exit; the refund is processed against MY tourist tax rules. The catch: tourist-tax refunds at airport on the way out can be slow if you didn’t get the in-mall declaration done — do the GPO-side paperwork at the time of purchase, not at KLIA the next morning.
Counterfeit risk at GPO is low — this is a legitimate Simon Premium Outlets venue, not a flea market — but always check authenticity tags and serial numbers on luxury items, especially if a queue at one Coach stall looks oddly disorganised.
The single biggest mistake day-trippers make is shopping at GPO on the descent rather than the ascent. Going up first means carrying purchases into the cable car, into SkyAvenue, into your hotel room, and into a four-hour theme-park day. Hitting GPO first means leaving the bags in the car at the base, then climbing into the SkyWay clean.
For 2D1N visitors, the cleanest pattern is: GPO morning on day one (10am to noon, before tour buses arrive at 11am to 1pm), bags into the car, SkyWay up to summit, day one and overnight at the top, then descend the next afternoon for any final outlet stop before the drive back. For day-trippers from KL — see our Genting from KL day trip guide — GPO is the natural first stop after the 1-hour drive from KL CBD before the cable car climb.
Three Simon outlets serve different SG-relevant catchments. The honest comparison:
| Outlet | Location | Brand depth | From SG | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JPO (Johor Premium Outlets) | Kulai, Johor | 130+ stores | ~1.5 hr drive | SG residents — closest by far; weekend day-trip with no overnight |
| GPO (Genting Premium Outlets) | Bentong, Pahang (SkyWay base) | 150+ stores | ~5.5 hr drive | Genting trip add-on; the largest brand selection of the three |
| Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA | KLIA airport area | 100+ stores | ~5 hr drive or fly | Pre-flight shopping for KLIA-departing travellers |
The honest steer: JPO is closer for pure shopping — 1.5 hours from SG vs 5.5 hours to GPO. GPO only justifies the drive when Genting itself is on the itinerary. Mitsui is a pre-flight slot, not a destination.
Within the broader Malaysian retail map, GPO is outlet pricing — distinct from full-retail malls like KL Mid Valley Megamall (full tenant range, current-season pricing) or the JB and Penang mall clusters. If you want full luxury (Hermes, LV, Cartier, Rolex), route to KL Pavilion or Suria KLCC; GPO doesn’t carry the top houses. Compare the JB and Penang mall maps in our JB shopping mall guide and Penang shopping mall guide for the wider regional retail picture.
One more distinction worth nailing: SkyAvenue at the Genting summit is a different animal. SkyAvenue is full-retail, current-season — Apple, Sephora, Watsons, Coffee Bean, the Genting Highlands lifestyle mall. GPO is outlet pricing — last-season stock, end-of-line, post-clearance. They serve different shopping intents on the same trip. Most weekend visitors do both: GPO on the ascent for outlet bargains, SkyAvenue at the summit for impulse buys, dining and the connected casino-and-cinema cluster.
For couples planning a Genting weekend with the GPO outlet stop layered into a romantic itinerary, see our Genting couples getaway guide — premium shopping cluster pairs naturally with the Hakkasan dinner and Spa at Genting day.
SG to Genting is a 5.5 to 6 hour drive each way via the Tuas Second Link, the North-South Expressway, the Karak Highway and the GPO base exit. We chauffeur door-to-door from SGD ~390 (Standard MPV) one-way — that’s roughly SGD $50 above the SG↔KL fare given the extra distance and the mountain road. Genting isn’t in our fixed pricing matrix for that reason; we hedge against the additional kilometres rather than quote a flat. All Causeway clearance and Malaysian highway tolls are included — see our SG to KL chauffeur hub for the route mechanics extended to Genting.
The Standard MPV (Voxy / Noah / Serena, 7-seat) is the workhorse for shopping-laden returns — boot space matters when GPO bags multiply. The Luxury MPV (Alphard / Vellfire) is the upgrade for elderly parents or longer trips. Our fleet has the tier breakdown. For groups of 8+, see group bus rental. Driving yourself: VEP application guide has the post-July-2025 rules. For SG-side hourly disposal before a long-haul departure, our full-day driver framing covers the airport runs and pre-trip errands.
~150+ stores across 425,000 square feet — the largest of the three Simon Premium Outlets in Malaysia. Opened June 2017 as a joint venture between Simon Premium Outlets and Genting Plantations Berhad, sitting at the Awana SkyWay cable car base.
30 to 65 percent off original retail across the catalogue. Premium fashion (Coach, Tory Burch, Michael Kors) sits in the 40 to 60 percent band; sports brands (Nike, Adidas) at 30 to 50 percent. Best clearance windows are around MY public holidays, post-CNY, post-Hari Raya and post-Christmas.
Yes for foreign tourists with passport — refunds are processed against MY tourist tax rules. Get the in-mall declaration done at the time of purchase rather than waiting for KLIA on the way out, where the queue can be slow.
For pure shopping, JPO is closer — 1.5 hours from SG vs 5.5 hours to GPO. GPO has the bigger brand selection (~150 vs ~130 stores) but only justifies the drive when Genting itself is on the itinerary. Treat GPO as a Genting trip add-on, not as a standalone destination.
No. GPO carries Coach, Tory Burch, Michael Kors and similar accessible-luxury houses but not the top tier. For Hermes, LV, Cartier or Rolex, route to KL Pavilion or Suria KLCC instead.
Going up. Easier to leave purchases in the car at the SkyWay base than to carry them through the cable car, the casino floor and the hotel room. The exception is a final outlet sweep on the descent if there’s a specific item you skipped — but the bulk of the shop should be done before the mountain.
Door-to-door private chauffeur is the comfortable option. Drive is 5.5 to 6 hours each way — Standard MPV from SGD ~390 one-way (about SGD $50 above SG↔KL given the mountain road), all tolls and Causeway clearance included. WhatsApp us with your hotel address, dates and group size and we’ll line up the right tier in a jiffy.
