Desaru Fruit Farm is a working 25-acre tropical fruit farm at Bandar Penawar, about 10 km from the Desaru Coast precinct. It carries upwards of 250 fruit species — durian, rambutan, mangosteen, dragon fruit, jackfruit, soursop, custard apple, longan, lychee — many of which most SG kids have only ever met as a label on a Cold Storage shelf. The headline format is a guided 2-hour farm tour in English or Bahasa Melayu, including a fruit-tasting session, a walk through the orchards, the on-site bee farm and a small petting zoo at the end.

Pricing runs Adult MYR 78 / Child MYR 50 for the tour package, which bundles the farm entry, the guided walk, fruit tasting and a simple lunch. Open daily 9 AM-5 PM; reservations are worth making for weekends and MY school holidays. The visit is at its best in fruit season — June through September is peak for durian, rambutan and mangosteen, and the tasting tray gets noticeably more interesting in those months. Off-season the orchard still works as an educational walk; the tasting just leans more on the year-round species.

It’s been operating since the 1950s and is the largest crocodile farm in Peninsular Malaysia — around 150+ crocodiles across multiple ponds and breeding areas. Entry is MYR 20 per person for the educational tour and croc-feeding viewing. Daily 9 AM-5:30 PM.

The headline kid moment is the crocodile feeding show, scheduled at fixed times during the day — usually around 11 AM and 3 PM, but check on arrival because timings can shift with weather and croc behaviour. The keepers walk the perimeter and toss meat to the larger crocs from a safe distance. It’s loud, it’s a bit graphic for very young kids, and it’s the part the 8-12 set will remember. The rest of the visit is a self-paced walk past the breeding ponds and the holding enclosures.

Honest expectation-setting: this is a working farm, not a polished zoo. The infrastructure is utilitarian, the signage is bilingual but limited, and the croc enclosures are functional rather than scenic. If you’re expecting Singapore Zoo-grade interpretation, you’ll be underwhelmed. Important — Desaru Ostrich Farm closed December 2024

The Desaru Ostrich Farm was a popular family stop for years and still appears on many travel-blog itineraries, booking platforms and Google search results. It closed permanently in December 2024. There is no comparable replacement currently in the Desaru area. If you’ve planned a half-day around it based on older content, you’ll need to swap it out — the fruit farm and crocodile farm cover most of the same kid-energy slot, and the Sungei Lebam kayak below is the older-kid alternative.

We’re flagging this explicitly because we’ve seen SG families drive out from Desaru Coast on outdated info and find a closed gate. If a single source — including a 2024 blog post — is your only reference, double-check current operating status before the trip.

Sungei Lebam mangrove kayak — for older kids and adults

Sungei Lebam River Kayak Tour (run by the Jungle Walla operator) is a 3-hour guided mangrove paddle with hotel transfer from Desaru Coast, a professional guide and a light lunch. Pricing runs MYR 200-250 per adult; age 12+ recommended. The route winds through tidal mangrove channels with regular sightings of long-tailed macaques on overhanging branches, sea eagles overhead and kingfishers darting along the water.

This is the older-kid and adult complement to the fruit-and-croc cluster. The age limit (12+) genuinely matters — the kayaks are stable but the channels narrow and the paddle is 2.5-3 hours of work, which is too much for a 6-year-old even as a passenger. How to plan a Desaru farm day from Singapore

Desaru is around 220 km / ~2.5 hours from Singapore via Tuas Second Link and the Senai-Desaru Expressway E22 — the faster route for east-coast Johor by 30 to 45 minutes versus the Causeway-and-JB detour.
