The Desaru Ostrich Farm closed permanently in December 2024 — many SG-side travel guides and booking platforms still list it. Skip it from the plan; the crocodile farm and fruit farm are the remaining family-day-out anchors.

Kid logistics — strollers, food, weather, sun

Desaru is set up for kids in a way that some MY destinations aren’t. Stroller-friendly at all four main Desaru Coast hotels (Hard Rock, Westin, Anantara, One&Only) and at the Adventure Waterpark — paved paths, lifts, ramps. Kids menus at all major hotel restaurants and most Bandar Penawar mid-range venues. Babysitting at Hard Rock and Anantara around MYR 30-50 an hour through the concierge — book ahead. Cool-weather essentials are not needed at Desaru. The coastal climate runs 24-28°C year-round — standard SG-summer dress code (shorts, t-shirts, sandals) covers it. What you do need is sun protection — the coastal UV is stronger than central SG, sunscreen reapplies every 2 hours, hats and rashguards for kids in the waterpark. Bring mosquito repellent for kampung-edge stops at Tanjung Balau, the fruit farm and Sungei Lebam. The kayak tour has an age 12+ recommended floor — younger kids can ride as passengers but the operator may decline.

Pitfalls and things to know

Adventure Waterpark closed Tuesdays. Easy mistake from a Singapore calendar — verify the trip dates before booking. A Mon-Tue 1-night stay arrives to a closed waterpark.
Limited indoor backup if it rains. Most attractions are outdoor — fruit farm, crocodile farm, beach, waterpark, ATV. A rainy weekend compresses family options to hotel pool, hotel restaurants and shopping at Bandar Penawar. Build flex into the plan.
Sun protection is the real packing list. SG kids underdress for coastal UV the first time. Sunscreen reapply every 2 hours, rashguards in the waterpark, hats and sunglasses on the beach.
Restaurants outside hotels need advance booking on weekends. Sungai Rengit seafood venues fill 6-8 PM Saturday — book the table before driving.
