Standard MPV
Toyota Voxy
Budget-friendly family MPV — great for short cross-border runs. 5 pax with 2 checked + 2 cabin bags.
See Toyota Voxy details →JCI-accredited hospitals, Singapore-trained consultants, the same Siemens and GE equipment, often less than half the SG price. Here's where SG residents go for their annual screening across the Causeway.
JB health screening has quietly become one of the most considered cross-border decisions an SG resident makes. The pitch is simple: comprehensive packages — full blood work, ultrasound, ECG, tumour markers, specialist consult — at JCI-accredited private hospitals in Johor, often using the same Siemens, GE and Philips imaging kit you’d find at Mt Elizabeth or Raffles, with consultants who frequently trained in Singapore, the UK or Australia. The price gap runs 40–60% under the SG equivalent for the same scope, which on an annual screening cycle means SGD $1,200 a year saved per adult, compounding to SGD $4,000–8,000 a year for screening-active families.
This guide walks through the four hospitals SG residents most commonly use, what a comprehensive package actually contains, how booking and reports work, and the honest caveat on what JB screening is good for — and what it isn’t.
The instinct on first hearing the price gap is to assume something has been removed — older equipment, less senior staff, a thinner panel. None of that holds up at the four hospitals SG residents actually use. JCI accreditation (the international hospital accreditation standard) is the same one Mt Elizabeth, Raffles and Gleneagles SG carry. The lab equipment is the same — Siemens immunoassay analysers, GE ultrasound machines, Philips imaging — sourced from the same global suppliers.
What’s different is the cost base. JB hospital salaries, real estate, ancillary staffing and overheads sit at Malaysian rates while serving the same FDA / international standard of care. The result is a structurally lower price point on equivalent procedures, with the same clinical inputs. For preventive screening — which is mostly imaging, blood work and a specialist consult — the savings translate directly without compromise.
Opened 2019, JCI-accredited, 200+ beds, 100+ specialist consultants on panel. Strong on cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics and women’s health. Health screening packages run roughly MYR 800–3,500 (SGD $250–1,100) across basic, comprehensive and executive tiers. English-language reports and an SG-style consultation flow make this the default first recommendation for SG residents new to JB screening. Located inside the Mid Valley Southkey complex — which makes the day easy to combine with a money-changer or grocery stop on the way home.
Owned by KPJ Healthcare, Malaysia’s largest private hospital chain. Opened 2009, well-established, deep specialist bench. Strong on general health screening, gastroenterology, urology and paediatrics. Packages: MYR 600–2,800 (SGD $190–890). The Iskandar Puteri location pairs well with a Forest City or Medini property-viewing day if that’s also on your list.
Also KPJ chain, JCI-accredited, well-established with a long-standing SG patient base. Packages: MYR 700–3,000 (SGD $220–950). Tebrau location is closest to the Causeway among the four, which matters on early-morning fasting screening days.
IHH Healthcare-owned — the same group as SG Mt Elizabeth and Gleneagles SG. Opened 2015, premium pricing within the JB market, SG-equivalent service feel. Packages: MYR 1,500–5,000 (SGD $470–1,580). The most expensive of the four, and the closest to a Singapore-private-hospital experience for SG residents who want zero adjustment.
Sample contents from a Sunway / KPJ “executive” tier package at roughly MYR 2,500 (SGD $790):
The equivalent scope at Mt Elizabeth or Raffles in SG runs SGD $1,800–3,500. Same blood markers, same imaging, same consult shape — the gap is the cost-base differential, not a tier-down.
Booking lead time: email or call the hospital screening department 2–3 weeks ahead. Most have an English-speaking screening coordinator who handles SG patients regularly. Confirm: package tier, fasting requirements, expected duration, parking arrangements, whether a chauffeur drop-off is supported.
Fasting protocol: 8+ hours no food or water typical, so a screening day starts early. Most SG patients schedule a 7:30–8:00am arrival, finish by 1–2pm, then break fast at lunch in the same mall complex. If 8 hours of fasting and a 5am SG departure feels punishing, consider an overnight at a Tebrau or Iskandar Puteri hotel the night before — covered in our JB hotel guide from an earlier batch.
Reports: typically ready within 3–5 working days. Two collection options. Either schedule a follow-up consultation a week later (often a 30-minute review with the specialist), or have the report couriered to your SG address — most hospitals offer this for a small fee. The follow-up consult is worth the second trip if the screening flagged anything; otherwise the courier route is cleaner.
SG insurance reimbursement: AIA, Great Eastern, NTUC Income and Prudential all maintain MY-network coverage that includes the four hospitals above. Reimbursement claims for screening packages are routine. Ask the hospital’s billing desk for a fully itemised invoice in English — that’s what your SG insurer will need. Confirm in advance with your insurer whether your specific plan covers preventive screening or only diagnostic-on-symptoms; the rules vary by policy tier.
Concrete shape. An annual comprehensive screening at Sunway Velocity executive tier runs roughly SGD $600–800. The equivalent scope at Raffles or Mt Elizabeth in SG runs SGD $1,800–2,500. Net saving per adult per year: roughly SGD $1,200. For a couple doing this annually, that’s SGD $2,400 a year. For a family with two adult parents and two adult children doing annual screening — increasingly the pattern as Singapore residents move screening earlier — the annual saving compounds to SGD $4,000–8,000, before factoring chauffeur cost.
Chauffeur is a small fraction of that. A return Standard MPV trip from SG costs less than a tenth of one annual SG screening — the maths makes itself.
JB screening is best framed as annual prevention, not a treatment hub. Two things still belong in Singapore for most SG residents:
Complex follow-up surgery and oncology. If a screening flags something that needs sustained specialist management — a complex cardiac procedure, an oncology pathway with multiple treatment cycles, a major orthopaedic surgery with a months-long rehab — the integration with your SG GP, your SG insurer’s preferred network, your home and your support system usually outweighs the cost saving on any single procedure. Many SG patients do annual screening in JB, then return to an SG specialist if anything material is flagged. That’s the rational pattern.
Anything that needs ongoing follow-up across months. Chronic disease management, post-surgical rehab and oncology cycles benefit from continuity with one specialist who can see you on a week’s notice. Screening is a one-day commit; long-term care isn’t.
For other JB medical-tourism options that complement screening — aesthetics, dental, women’s-health adjacencies — see our JB aesthetic clinic guide and JB confinement centre guide. The broader JB-medical-tourism use-case landing for SG-side context is on our medical tourism transport Singapore page.
Two clean shapes work for SG patients.
Same-day fasting screening (~8 hours). 5:30–6:00am SG pickup, Causeway clear before peak, 7:30am hospital arrival, screening 8am–1pm, break fast at lunch, return SG by mid-afternoon. Standard MPV is the natural fit — comfortable seating for the early ride and boot space for the printed reports / souvenirs from the mall on the way home.
Overnight before screening (1N). Drive across the evening before, check into a Tebrau or Iskandar Puteri hotel, light dinner before the fasting window starts, hospital first thing the next morning. This shape is what we recommend for older parents, anyone with poor pre-fasting sleep, or anyone driving from East Coast / Pasir Ris (the early SG pickup gets brutal). The hotel options sit in our JB hotel guide.
Vehicle tiers and capacities on our fleet page; flat-fare cross-border framing on cross-border taxi; full pricing matrix on /pricing/. For multi-generational screening trips where you’d like the driver to wait at the hospital and run errands between, the full-day driver Singapore page covers the half-day disposal model.
The four hospitals SG residents most commonly use — Sunway Velocity, Regency, KPJ Puteri, Gleneagles Medini — are JCI-accredited, the same international standard SG private hospitals carry. They use the same Siemens, GE and Philips equipment, with FDA-approved labs and consultants frequently trained in SG, UK or Australia. For preventive screening, the clinical quality is equivalent.
40–60% less for the same scope. A comprehensive executive-tier package at Sunway Velocity runs SGD $600–800; the equivalent at Mt Elizabeth or Raffles runs SGD $1,800–3,500. Annual saving per adult is roughly SGD $1,200, compounding to SGD $4,000–8,000 a year for screening-active families.
Most major SG insurers — AIA, Great Eastern, NTUC Income and Prudential — accept claims from MY-network hospitals including the four above. Ask the hospital’s billing desk for a fully itemised invoice in English. Confirm with your insurer in advance whether your specific plan tier covers preventive screening or only diagnostic-on-symptoms.
Roughly 5 hours at the hospital — 7:30–8am arrival, finish by 1–2pm. Adding the SG↔JB chauffeur and Causeway, plan a full day from 5:30–6am pickup to mid-afternoon return. For older parents or anyone with poor pre-fasting sleep, an overnight stay before the screening makes the day far less punishing.
Reports are ready within 3–5 working days. You can either schedule a follow-up consultation with the specialist a week later (worth the trip if anything was flagged), or have the report couriered to your SG address — most hospitals offer this for a small fee.
Most SG patients return to an SG specialist for any material follow-up — complex surgery, oncology and chronic disease management benefit from continuity with one specialist near home. JB screening is best framed as annual prevention; treatment that runs across months is usually cleaner in SG.
Often worth it. The 8-hour fasting window plus a 5–6am SG departure makes for a hard day. An overnight at a Tebrau or Iskandar Puteri hotel — covered in our JB hotel guide — lets you start fasting after a light dinner and reach the hospital five minutes away the next morning.
