Muar is a heritage town on the south bank of the Muar River, about two hours up the NSE from Tuas. It’s the otak-otak capital of Malaysia and one of the easiest food-and-walk day trips a Singaporean can stitch together.

What’s in Muar?
Muar (also spelt Bandar Maharani) sits on the south bank of the Muar River in northwest Johor. It’s a working town with a serious food reputation — most famously for Muar-style otak-otak, which is wrapped in attap (nipa palm) leaves, clipped at the ends, and grilled or roasted over charcoal. That’s distinct from the banana-leaf otak you get in KL or Singapore, and the texture is noticeably different.
Beyond the otak-otak run, Muar is known for its preserved colonial-era shophouses, a heritage mural trail, and a riverfront that’s pleasant to walk at sunset. It’s a half-day town done well, or a comfortable overnight if you’re combining with Malacca.

How to get to Muar from Singapore
Muar is ~190 km from Singapore — far enough that it’s worth crossing at the right checkpoint and committing to one mode for the day.
