How to take the SJE bus from Singapore (Bugis) to JB

Singapore-Johore Express (SJE) is one of three operators running the Queen Street → Larkin Sentral route (alongside SBS Service 170 and Causeway Link CW2). It is the cheapest and most frequent option for central Singapore residents heading to Larkin’s long-distance bus terminal.

The route

• Singapore boarding: Queen Street Bus Terminal (next to Bugis MRT, EW12 / DT14)
• Singapore exit immigration: Woodlands Checkpoint
• Malaysia entry immigration: Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI)
• JB destination: Larkin Sentral (Larkin Bus Terminal)

SJE is a non-stop service in the same way as Service 170 and CW2 — no en-route stops besides the two immigration checkpoints. The 21-minute journey time assumes minimal queues.

Schedule and frequency

• First bus: 06:30 daily
• Last bus: 23:30 daily
• Frequency: every 7–20 min from Queen Street Terminal — one of the most frequent cross-border services
• Journey time: ~21 min on a clear day; weekend peaks can stretch to 60+ min at Causeway

Fare and payment

• SG → JB: SGD 3.30 per pax
• JB → SG: RM 4.80 per pax
• Payment: usually cash; some buses accept EZ-Link. Confirm at the Queen Street kiosk before boarding

Why pick SJE over CW2 or Service 170?

All three operators cover Queen Street ↔ Larkin. Differences:

• SJE — SGD 3.30, every 7–20 min, cash-friendly. Lowest fare of the three.
• Causeway Link CW2 — SGD 5 by EZ-Link / contactless card. More premium feel, accepts more payment methods.
• SBS Service 170 — SGD 2.50–2.60 by EZ-Link. Cheapest, but it is a regular SBS public bus that also picks up local SG passengers, so it is slower and more crowded.

SJE strikes the balance — affordable, frequent, dedicated cross-border (no local stops). Most Bugis-area travellers default to SJE for quick JB shopping or Larkin connections.

Cross-border immigration process

1. Board SJE at Queen Street Terminal, pay your fare
2. Bus drives to Woodlands Checkpoint — alight to clear SG exit immigration
3. Keep your boarding pass — board the next SJE bus on the same route after clearing immigration
4. Cross the Causeway by bus
5. Alight at Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) for Malaysian entry immigration
6. Re-board SJE for the final leg to Larkin Sentral

What to do at Larkin Sentral

Larkin Sentral is JB’s main long-distance bus hub. From there:

• Onward bus to KL, Mersing, Desaru, Kluang, Penang, Ipoh — Larkin’s primary purpose
• Local Grab / taxi to Iskandar Puteri, Bukit Indah, Mount Austin, KSL, City Square
• Walking distance: Larkin Mall, food courts, hawker stalls

If your final destination is JB city centre (City Square, Komtar JBCC), JB Sentral via CW1 or AC7 might be more convenient than Larkin via SJE.

When SJE isn’t the right call

• You don’t live near Bugis — getting to Queen Street from outside central SG eats the time + cost savings
• Your destination is JB Sentral or City Square — Larkin is on the wrong side of JB; you’ll need an onward Grab
• Group of 3+ with luggage — at SGD 3.30 × 3 = SGD 10 each way before onward Grab from Larkin, private chauffeur becomes competitive
• Going further than JB — KL, Mersing, Desaru via Larkin requires another bus / vehicle; private chauffeur runs door-to-door
• Friday evening / Sunday returns — Causeway Checkpoint queues blow up the 21-minute travel estimate
