The 90-minute ferry is a real consideration with toddlers — but the resort payoff is worth it. Reach for Cassia Bintan if you need self-catering apartment-style suites for multi-room family parties. Pick Batam only if your weekend goal is mall-and-meal and your kids tolerate the day-trip rhythm.
Couples (no kids)
Bintan for honeymoon, anniversary or wellness escape. Banyan Tree Bintan and The Sanchaya are the SG↔Indonesia premium-island option without flight — 30-50% cheaper than the Capella Sentosa or Shangri-La equivalent SG resort weekend. Batam for casual weekend, spa-heavy or food-led trips. Bintan for a golf weekend — Laguna Bintan and Ria Bintan are two championship courses inside the Bintan Resorts precinct. Batam for shopping spree, spa day or a nightlife slant — Nagoya Hill, BCS Mall and DC Mall, plus the spa-and-dining strip in Lubuk Baja, suit 2-4 pax better than a resort. Combined-friends trip with mixed appetites: Bintan is the safer single-day-of-the-weekend pick.
Business travellers and digital nomads
Batam wins. Closer, faster ferry, business hotels (Aston, Mercure, Best Western), urban food, and a coworking scene. Bintan is leisure-anchored — viable for a weekend offsite but not for a midweek work-from-island stretch.
Day-trippers
Batam only. 30-60 min ferry plus 8-10 hours on island fits inside a single day — many SG residents do Saturday Batam shopping + spa + lunch as a regular outing. Bintan does not work as a day-trip: 60-90 min ferry plus 15-30 min resort transfer plus return = 12+ hours round-trip, with maybe four useful hours on the beach. Don’t try.

Combined Bintan + Batam — the rare 3D2N split
It is technically possible to do one night Bintan, one night Batam in a 3D2N — there is an inter-island connector ferry (~SGD $25-40) between the two. In practice, almost no one does this: the trip shapes don’t blend, the inter-island ferry adds half a day of transit, and the planning overhead beats the novelty value. Pick one island per weekend. If you want to taste both, do Batam day-trip on a separate Saturday after a Bintan 3D2N — much cleaner.

Can I day-trip Bintan from Singapore?
Not really. The 60-90 minute ferry plus 15-30 minute resort transfer plus return adds up to 12+ hours round-trip, with maybe four useful hours on the beach. Bintan is structured around the resort overnight. For a true day-trip, Batam is the only viable choice.
Is Bintan more expensive than Batam?
