Tee off at 7 AM Saturday, finish by midday, lunch at the clubhouse, and you’re back at the hotel pool before the kids notice you’ve been gone.

The Els Club Desaru Coast — what’s on offer

Ocean Course (27 holes, Ernie Els)

The headline. Three nine-hole loops — Lakes (Par 36), Coast (Par 36) and Ridge (Par 37) — that combine into a tournament-ready 18 with rotating shape. The Coast nine plays alongside the South China Sea with the kind of ocean-view tee boxes that sell themselves on Instagram. The Lakes nine is more strategic, with water in play on a majority of holes. Ernie Els routed the course personally; the routing reflects his preference for risk-reward decisions off the tee rather than punishing rough.

Important 2025 note: The Ridge nine is closed April–December 2025 for re-grassing. During this window the club rotates Lakes plus Coast as the main 18, which is still a strong loop but does compress weekend tee-time availability. Book early.

Valley Course (18 holes, Vijay Singh)

Eighteen holes routed through inland valleys with 177 bunkers — Vijay Singh’s signature hazard density. Wider fairways than Ocean, but the bunker placement makes it the more forgiving course only on paper. Locals rate it the better walking course; the elevation changes are gentler. If you’re playing 36 holes in a weekend, Valley on day one and Ocean on day two is the typical shape.

Green fees and what’s included

2025 published rates, MYR-quoted, inclusive of 8% SST. Includes shared cart, locker, golfer insurance and one hour of practice-facility access before tee-off.

Weekday (Mon–Fri): MYR 310–415 depending on course tier and booking window.

For SG context: Sentosa Golf Club green fees run SGD $200–300 plus mandatory caddie; Marina Bay Golf Course is the public option at lower rates but with no equivalent ocean-side routing. Els Club at MYR 310–465 lands at roughly SGD $94–140, a 40–50% saving on Sentosa for arguably equivalent design pedigree. There’s also no six-month membership waitlist — you book online and turn up.

Caddie, cart and add-ons

The line items that aren’t included in the green fee, and which catch first-time visitors out:

Caddie: not included. Mandatory caddie fee MYR ~92, plus a customary tip of MYR ~50 — budget MYR 140–150 per round per bag. The club describes caddies as quasi-mandatory on weekends and public holidays. On weekdays you can sometimes negotiate a caddie waiver in advance, especially if you’re walking and forewarn the starter.
Cart: shared cart included; carts are typically mandatory on weekends and public holidays. On weekdays walking is more freely permitted on Valley.
Club rental: approximately MYR 150–250 per round for a full set from the pro shop. Worth booking ahead during high-demand windows.
Range balls: a small basket is included with the practice-facility access; additional baskets are pay-per-bucket.

Dress code and operating notes

Standard club rules, lightly enforced:

Collared shirt mandatory. No singlets, no T-shirts. The pro shop sells branded shirts if you forget.
No jeans on the course. Golf pants or tailored shorts only; mid-thigh or longer.
Soft spikes. Metal spikes not permitted.
Tee times: first tee from sunrise, last tee typically 3 PM weekdays / 2 PM weekends to clear before dusk.

The clubhouse has a full restaurant and bar; food and drink are above-average for resort-club standard. Most SG players grab breakfast pre-round and lunch post-round at the clubhouse rather than the hotel.

How to slot a round into a Desaru weekend

Golf is a 3D2N add-on, not a 2D1N item. A round is 4.5–5 hours from first tee to last putt, plus 30–45 minutes warm-up and pre-round admin, plus the changeover. That’s a six-hour block — too much to layer on top of a single waterpark day.

The 3D2N shape that works:

Friday evening: drive up, check in, dinner.
Saturday: Adventure Waterpark or beach day with the family.
Sunday morning: 06:30 tee time. Finish by 11:30. Quick clubhouse breakfast, drive home.

Couples and golf-priority groups flip Saturday and Sunday — golf Saturday morning, beach or seafood Saturday afternoon, slow Sunday and home. How to plan it from Singapore

The drive is 2.5 hours from Tuas via the Senai-Desaru Expressway E22 — short enough that an early-morning departure on tee-time day is plausible. We don’t recommend it; if you’ve come for golf, the Friday-evening 3D2N shape gives you an actual warm-up window and removes the risk that a Tuas queue costs you your tee time.

For chauffeured rides, most golf parties of two to four pick a Standard MPV (Voxy class) for the boot space — golf bags eat luggage capacity fast, and a Voxy comfortably takes four sets plus overnight bags. Common pitfalls for SG golfers

Booking late on a weekend. With Ridge nine closed for re-grassing, weekend tee times move fast. Book 2–3 weeks out for Saturday mornings.
Forgetting the caddie cost. Budget MYR 140–150 per bag on top of the green fee — easy to overlook in the SGD comparison.
Travelling with metal spikes. Some older Singapore club shoes still have them. Soft spikes only.
Trying to play 18 then drive home. A 06:30 tee time finishing 11:30 leaves a tight window for lunch and a 2.5-hour drive. Either start earlier or stay one more night.
Underestimating warm-up time. The practice facility is generous but allow a clean 30 minutes before tee-off, especially if you’re renting clubs.
