Pulau Tinggi sits roughly 32 km off the Mersing coast — about an hour by boat from the Mersing pier — and has been part of the Sultan Mahmud Marine Park since 1985. That marine-park designation is the most useful fact about the island: reef cover is well-preserved, fishing inside park boundaries is restricted, and the dive sites have aged better than the unprotected Mersing waters. The other thing worth flagging up front is the silhouette — Pulau Tinggi is a volcanic island with a distinctive wedge-shape mountain rising to about 700 m. You see it from the boat long before you arrive, and it’s the visual signature of the trip.

What Pulau Tinggi is and why SG travellers go

Pulau Tinggi is a small marine-park island with an active fishing community of roughly 500 residents plus two main resort operators on the beachfront. The marine-park designation since 1985 puts it in a different bracket from unprotected Mersing waters like Rawa or Pulau Besar — coral cover is meaningfully better, and the dive site list around the island is taken seriously by Mersing-based dive operators. The wedge-shape mountain (Gunung Semundu) is the photo signature; the protected reef is the real reason most SG divers and snorkellers come.

It’s the value pick for divers and adventurous couples who want a less-touristy MY island than Tioman without giving up reef quality. Getting there from Singapore

Two legs — drive to Mersing, then resort boat across:

SG → Mersing drive — ~3 hours each way via Tuas Second Link → Senai-Desaru Expressway E22 → Kota Tinggi → Mersing. Around 210 km. Saturday morning Tuas peak adds 45–60 minutes.
Mersing → Tinggi boat — ~1 hour on a resort-arranged boat. Schedule is bundled into the room package; departures cluster late morning. The 1-hour open-water leg can get rough in 1.5–2 m swell — Stugeron 30 min before boarding is the standard rule.
Total transit — roughly 4.5 hours each way once buffers are factored in.

The Sultan Mahmud Marine Park designation gives Tinggi 12+ dive sites within easy boat range, with visibility 15–25 m in the April–September dry-season window. Mountain hike, snorkel and beach

The non-dive activity menu is short but distinctive:

Gunung Semundu hike — the wedge-shape mountain, guided 4–5 hour round-trip with a steep ridge climb through jungle. Not a casual walk — best for adventurous travellers age 16+ with a base fitness level. Guide is essential (~MYR 150/pax) because the trail is unmarked in sections and the jungle scrambles are non-trivial. Bring 2L+ water, long sleeves and grippy shoes. Worth it for the summit views over the Mersing-region islands; not worth it if you’re nursing a knee.
House reef snorkel — accessible from the resort beach, calm shallow water, good for first-time snorkellers and kids 6+. Marine park’s protected status keeps coral cover meaningfully better than Rawa’s lagoon.

Practical — cash, signal, monsoon

The bits that catch first-time Tinggi visitors out:

No ATM on the island — bring MYR cash for tips, drinks, dive extras and souvenirs. Withdraw before leaving Mersing.
Limited mobile signal — patchy across the island. Inform office in advance.
Power 24-hour at both resorts via generator. Reliable for air-con and fans.
Closed Nov–Feb monsoon — strictly. The whole Mersing-region cluster shuts together.
Boat schedules tied to resort timings — there’s no daily catamaran ferry like Tioman; you arrive and depart on the resort’s boat schedule. Build the trip around it, not vice versa.
Limited dining options outside the resorts — the fishing village has a small warung or two but no restaurant strip. Resort full-board packages are the practical answer.

How to plan a Tinggi trip from Singapore

The shape that works is 3D2N (Fri–Sun) as the realistic minimum given the 4.5-hour transit each way. 4D3N (Fri–Mon) is the more comfortable shape for dive-cert trips — PADI Open Water needs 3 full days on water. Day-trip is not viable. April to September is the optimal water-clarity window; March and October are workable shoulder months.

From SGD ~340 (Standard MPV) for SG↔Mersing one-way is the reference figure — Mersing isn’t in our fixed pricing matrix, but the distance matches our Desaru long-haul. Can we day-trip to Pulau Tinggi from Mersing?

Not really. The 1-hour boat each way and the resort-tied schedule mean a day-trip eats most of the on-island time. Some Mersing-based snorkel boat tours visit Tinggi waters as part of a multi-island day-trip without overnighting at the resorts, which is the closest thing to a day visit. For a proper Tinggi experience, 3D2N is the realistic minimum.
