Weather and what kids need to bring

Ipoh CBD runs 28-32°C year-round — same hot-and-humid Singapore climate, no cool-weather layers needed at the city or at Sunway Lost World. Two exceptions:

Lost World Hot Springs Night Park sits at mid-mountain elevation in Tambun and the night air drops to 22-25°C — bring a light jacket or hoodie for kids after they leave the hot pools and walk to the car park.
Cave temples are naturally cool inside (limestone caves stay 23-25°C even at midday) — kids will want a light layer if they’re sensitive to temperature changes.

Sun protection is non-negotiable. Ipoh’s UV is strong even on overcast days; the cave temple courtyards, mural lane and Sunway Lost World outdoor zones expose kids for hours. Pack SPF 50, wide-brim hat, sunglasses, water bottle. Insect repellent helps at the cave temples (forested temple gardens carry mosquitoes). Closed shoes for the cave temples and the Old Town cobblestones; flip-flops only at the hotel pool and Lost World water park.

The long drive — what kids need on board

Ipoh’s 5-hour drive each way is the honest catch. The PLUS Highway stretch is mostly straight expressway with rest stops every 60-90 minutes; the final 30 minutes off the highway into Ipoh CBD is urban-arterial. Motion sickness is less of a problem than the Cameron run (no hairpin ascent) but the duration alone wears out under-5s. Pack motion sickness pills 30 minutes before departure, ginger sweets, an empty bag for the worst case, and tablets with downloaded movies for the 10-hour total driving day. Plan rest stops at R&R Pagoh (1.5 hrs from Tuas), R&R Sungai Buloh (3.5 hrs in, just past KL on the northbound run) or R&R Tapah (4 hrs in, ~45 minutes south of Ipoh). All three have toilet, food court, prayer room and stretch space. Build in 20-30 minutes per stop; kids tolerate the drive much better with two structured breaks than with one long stretch.
