The Tanah Merah ferry crosses straight to Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal in about 90 minutes, bypassing both Causeway checkpoints. Or you can take the road via Tuas Second Link, door-to-door, in roughly two hours.

Both options work. They suit different trips. This page is an honest look at when the ferry is the smarter choice and when a road chauffeur makes more sense.

Who runs the Tanah Merah to Desaru ferry?

The route is operated under the Desaru Ferries brand jointly with Batam Fast Ferry. Service shape, as of writing in 2026:

Around 5 weekly connections, typically Thursday to Sunday. Schedule is subject to change — verify on the operator’s site before booking.
Departure: Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, Singapore east coast.
Arrival: Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal. When sea conditions are rough, sailings can divert to Tanjung Pengelih.
Crossing time: roughly 1 hour 30 minutes.
Onward transfer: a short shuttle bus from the ferry terminal to the resort cluster (Hard Rock, Westin, Anantara, One&Only).

When the ferry is the right call

The ferry is genuinely the better choice in several real scenarios:

Solo or couple traveller. Per-person ferry tickets typically beat the per-vehicle chauffeur cost when you’re only 1-2 people.
Pre-existing resort booking that includes ferry transfer. Some Hard Rock and Westin packages bundle the ferry leg — using it doesn’t cost extra.
You enjoy sea travel. The crossing has its own appeal. If the boat is part of the holiday, that’s a legitimate reason to choose it.
East-coast Singapore origin. If you’re staying near Changi or East Coast Park, Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal is genuinely close.
Avoiding Causeway peak jams. The sea route bypasses both Singapore and Malaysian checkpoints completely. On a Friday evening Eastern long weekend, that matters.

When Jumppy is the better fit

We’re a stronger fit when the trip has any of these shapes:

Group of 3 or more travelling together. The per-vehicle cross border taxi cost beats individual ferry tickets quickly. A Std MPV from SGD 150 split across 5 family members works out to under SGD 20 each.
Family with kids, elderly travellers or significant luggage. Door-to-door beats multi-leg ferry transfer every time.
Weekday travel. The ferry typically runs Thursday to Sunday. Mon-Wed Desaru trips need a road option.
Monsoon season. November to February sees more sea-condition cancellations. Roads keep running.
Tight schedule. The ferry runs on a fixed timetable; we dispatch on demand. If your meeting ends at 4pm and the resort dinner is at 7pm, the road wins.
Any JB destination beyond the Desaru resort cluster. The ferry only services Desaru Coast. We do Singapore to Desaru, Desaru weekend trips, Sungai Rengit, Pengerang and east-Johor towns equally.

FAQ

Is Jumppy a competitor of the ferry?

Not really — we serve different traveller shapes. Solo and couple travellers often prefer the ferry; families and groups usually prefer the road. We’re happy to recommend the ferry if it fits your trip better.

Should I just book the ferry directly?

If you’re 1-2 people, your origin is east-coast SG, you’re travelling Thursday to Sunday and you don’t have heavy luggage, the ferry is a fine choice. Otherwise, a chauffeur is usually less faff.

How long does the road trip to Desaru actually take?

Around 2 hours from central Singapore via Tuas Second Link in normal traffic. Causeway peak hours (Friday evening, Sunday afternoon) can add 30-60 minutes. Our drivers route around delays where possible.

What happens if the ferry is cancelled due to weather?

That’s an operator-side issue between you and the ferry company. We can’t help with the ferry refund, but we can dispatch a chauffeur as a same-day backup if you need to get to Desaru on the road instead — just WhatsApp us.

Does Jumppy include all tolls and Causeway fees?

Yes — for Std Car, Sedan, MPV and Hiace tiers, our cross-border flat fares include Causeway clearance and Malaysian tolls. No surprise surcharges.

Can you do a Desaru round trip with the same driver?
